FLORIDA-GEORGIA LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION - FGLSAMP


FGLSAMP at USF provides assistantships to underrepresented minorities who are enrolled in graduate programs that lead to the Ph.D. in science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) fields.

FGLSAMP graduate assistants mentor and tutor undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics majors 20 hours a week. They are funded in the Spring and Fall.

FGLSAMP graduate assistants monitor the progress of SEM undergraduates on a weekly basis. In addition to tutoring and mentoring undergraduates, they develop program activities to increase awareness of careers in SEM areas. They also help students develop four-year academic plans.

FGLSAMP graduate assistants help undergraduate prepare to take the graduate record exam and assist them in applying for research internships and for admission to graduate programs.

To become an a FGLSAMP graduate assistant, graduate students must be:
  • An underrepresented minority (African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan native or Pacific Islander)
  • Enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, or engineering
  • Recommended by a USF department chairman or the graduate coordinator in one of the area listed above.
