What is an Mechanical Engineer?
A Mechanical Engineer is directly involved in the design of everything that moves. Be it an engine, automoblie, or even a space shuttle. These engineers make sure that a door will close properly or that gears are in the right ratio so that a car can accelerate at maximum efficency. Problems are solved in a way that the output is something you can touch and feel. Opportunities as an Mechanical Engineer are limitless .
What does the ME department have to offer?
There are many opportunities at the undergraduate level to work on designing something, most notably in the senior capstone project. Visit down below to find out what the department has to offer.
Or visit their web site at http://me.eng.usf.edu/
The Culminating part of a Mechanical Engineering student's bachlors, is the senior project. In this a student puts together all of his previously aquired knowlege and creates a working machine. An area of great intrest of many mechanical students are in the areas of the disabled's rehabilitation and accessibility.
Because of this, many students opt to design something that will facilitate the life of a disabled person.
To the left is a potter's wheel mounted on a wheelchair accessible table. This table was specifically designed for instruction as it features seperate controles that allow a pottery instructor to control a student's station. An intresting point of this project is that it will be put in use by a art school for the disabled.
Below a standard table turns into a desktop station with the push of a button. Since someone confined to a wheelchair has limited arm movement and reach, everything must be within 18" a computer on the desk just takes up to much room so this project hids the computer when it is not in use giving the person more table room when needed.

In this lab, Students attempt to reduce the vibration a disk. students can hook up this machine to an osilloscope and see how and when counter balances most be placed to minimize vibration by a certain percentage.
Pictured
to the left is a programable object controller. Either the handheld set or acomputer
can pass a set of instructions to the programable object controller which then
is set up in the feild and continues to work as defined.
How does this relate to real world experience? Pictured below is a programable object controller donated by TECO Energy so that students could learn how to operate real world machines.
Something new for this semester is a diesel engine test bed.
Here mechanical engineering students work with all aspects of the engine, which can be tested in various ways. So by a hands on invovlement, the student learns about these engines.
